A Few Deep Forces
A handful of deep, general-purpose forces — not the endless gadgets — decide where the world is heading.
Your feed shows fifty “revolutionary” technologies this month — a new app, a gadget, a material, a coin. You cannot track them all, and most will vanish by next year. But underneath the churn, a few deep forces are quietly deciding which of those things even become possible. If you could watch only a handful of things to understand where the world is heading, which handful — and how would you choose them? Hold that question; by the end you should have a repeatable test for spotting what actually matters.
A few deep forces, not a thousand gadgets
Most inventions are narrow: they do one thing, have their moment, and are forgotten. A rare few are general-purpose — they show up almost everywhere, keep getting cheaper and better for decades, and enable whole waves of other inventions. Economists call these general-purpose technologies, and electricity is the classic example.
This is where the future actually gets decided. The deep forces are upstream; the gadgets are downstream of them. So the trick to seeing where the world is heading is not to track every gadget — it is to find the small number of forces the gadgets are riding on.
Three tests for a major force
You can screen any technology with three questions:
1. General — does it apply across many domains, or just one niche?
2. Improving — is it on a sustained curve of falling cost and rising capability (an S-curve, or a stack of them)?
3. Enabling — does it unlock other technologies that could not exist without it?
A deep force answers “yes” to all three. A novelty gadget fails them. Notice this is just Lesson 2’s signal-vs-noise skill turned into a checklist: the forces are the durable signal, the gadgets are the noise riding on top.
Run two candidates through the tests. • Electricity — General? Yes (lights, heat, motors, electronics, computing). Improving? Yes (cost fell and reliability rose for over a century). Enabling? Yes (the computer and the internet are impossible without it). → a deep force; watch it. • A single viral kitchen gadget — General? No, it does one task. Improving on a curve? No, it is a fixed product. Enabling? No, nothing is built on top of it. → noise; enjoy it, but do not forecast with it.

Four forces pass all three tests right now, and — as the next module will show — they reinforce each other:
- Compute — information processing getting relentlessly cheaper.
- Energy — the master resource everything else runs on.
- Biology becoming engineering — reading and writing life a bit like software.
- AI — making a kind of intelligence cheap and abundant.
The coming lessons take them one at a time, in plain terms. The payoff is leverage: once you can name the deep forces, you can judge any hyped “next big thing” by asking whether it is a force — or just an app riding on one.
Think of a landscape with rivers and puddles. The rivers — where water actually flows and where towns can grow — are the deep forces. The countless puddles after each rainstorm are individual gadgets: they appear, glint for a day, and dry up. If you want to predict where the towns will be in fifty years, you study the rivers, not the puddles. Tracking every shiny gadget is puddle-watching.
Suppose three things trend this month: a new social app, a cheaper way to make solar panels, and a viral gadget. Screen each with the three tests. 1. Social app — general? Somewhat, but it is one product; improving on a deep curve? Not really; enabling new technologies? No. → mostly noise. 2. Cheaper solar — general? Energy touches everything; improving? On a long cost-down curve; enabling? Yes — cheap energy unlocks cheap compute, desalination, industry. → a deep force (energy); watch it. 3. Viral gadget — fails all three. → noise. Same headlines, but the three tests quietly told you that the boring solar footnote, not the two exciting products, is where the future is moving.
